Chelsea and Right To Play in 2009 - Changing children’s lives across the world

Throughout 2009, Right To Play and Chelsea Football Club have continued to develop their successful partnership with many successful fundraising events. We think it's important you are aware of these and the incredible difference they will make to our programmes worldwide.

Right To Play and Chelsea in America

Right To Play and Chelsea in America

July was a remarkable month of activity for Right To Play and Chelsea F.C. Throughout the month, Right To Play was delighted to join Chelsea on their pre-season tour of the United States of America.

Club Chairman Bruce Buck held a benefit reception in Seattle to discuss the importance of top sports clubs working with non-profit organisations to help bring about change. The players also wore Right To Play T-shirts throughout their warm-up sessions, helping to significantly generate awareness for the charity, and Michael Essien gave a great account of Right To Play's work to excited fans and media during a post-match interview in Dallas.

Celebrity Sports Day

Celebrity Sports Day

Also in July, Right To Play held their first ever Right To Play, Chelsea F.C. Celebrity Sports Day. It was generously supported by the entire Chelsea First Team and many other top sports stars, including Rugby Lions Winger Ugo Monye, Ex-England Captain Will Carling, New Zealand legend Zinzan Brooke, Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave, GB tennis stars Anne Keothavong and Laura Robson, and many, many more. Find out who HERE.

The Chelsea players showed tremendous commitment by playing football, and in the case of Petr Cech, tennis(!), for hours on end with the delighted attendees. Overall, the day raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Right To Play, and as Petr Cech said: “It’s been a great event, it raises money for the charity, which is a very important thing, and we have had a lot of kids here who have been really enjoying themselves, it has been a great afternoon”.

Sir Steve Redgrave agreed that the Chelsea team had been the stars of the day “It’s been a really good day, the Chelsea boys have made it into a really good occasion for the youngsters as well. It has been a great day”.

Corporate World Cup

Corporate World Cup

This May, Right To Play hosted our 3rd annual Corporate World Cup at Stamford Bridge. The event was enjoyed by over 100 people from the corporate world. We were supported by many former players and Chelsea staff. The whole day was fantastic and with the kind support of Chelsea F.C we managed to raise £80,000.

The Armani and Chelsea F.C. Fundraiser

The Armani and Chelsea F.C. Fundraiser

Hosted at the Emporio Armani store in London in March, this was a truly memorable event for all who attended. With the Chelsea First team out in force, many children were given the chance to rub shoulders with their idols and with John Terry acting as an auctioneer, the event raised a tremendous £30,000 for Right To Play and CLIC Sargent, Chelsea's other charity partner at the time.

Right To Play and Chelsea Going Forward

Right To Play and Chelsea Going Forward

With our partnership going from strength to strength, Right To Play and Chelsea are eager to continue with the great work that has been done by both parties to date. 2009 is far from over and together we will continue to raise funds and awareness for Right To Play’s programmes across the globe. Together, every year, we help thousands of children enter Right To Play’s programmes. Programmes that are designed to develop basic life skills, prevent diseases, teach conflict resolution and instill hope in children affected by war, poverty and disease.

With the 2012 London Olympics fast approaching, there are significant opportunities for Right To Play and Chelsea to work together to change the lives of thousands of children around the world. Both parties are committed to increasing participation in sport in both the UK and Worldwide. The partnership between Right To Play and Chelsea F.C., combined with Chelsea’s ‘Football in the Community’ scheme, provides an excellent framework with which to help deliver on many aspects of the Olympic legacy project, and together we can spread the ideals of co-operation, tolerance, fairplay and respect, both at home and across the world.

“What Right To Play achieve using sport is fantastic. Everyone at the club is fully behind their work and we are all proud to support them.” Frank Lampard.
